The Magic of Colombia: Unexpected and Unforgettable
Where to start? Colombia is one of those unexpected destinations where authenticity meets magical realism. My first visit was in 2017, exploring the capital, Bogotá. In 2018, I returned with a group of friends on a journey through Medellín and Cartagena. After five trips with clients since, I can confidently say: Colombia has officially seduced me. Every visit delivers new experiences, vibrant energy, and a sense of wonder.
A Culinary Adventure Like No Other
Food is always top of mind when I think of Colombia. From the invigorating seafood of Santa Marta and Cartagena to the mountainous abundance of tropical fruits, Colombia’s culinary scene rivals that of Peru and Mexico. Two of my favorite restaurants, El Cielo and Carmen in Medellín, are world-class dining experiences that shouldn’t be missed.
And let’s talk coffee. Colombia produces some of the best coffee in the world, and I was hooked. The combination of fertile soil, high-altitude plantations, and careful cultivation produces beans that are bold, aromatic, and unforgettable … even for someone like me who isn’t normally a coffee drinker.
Music, Dance, and the Rhythms of Colombia
Colombia pulses with music everywhere. In Cartagena, we visited at least a dozen salsa bars, learning to move with the locals’ irresistible energy. We explored Cumbia and Vallenato, discovering that Colombian music is far more than just Shakira. Even if you’re not a natural dancer, the rhythm is contagious. You’ll find yourself moving before you realize it.
Transformation and Community in Comuna 13
One of the most profound experiences was touring Comuna 13 in Medellín. Once notorious as one of the world’s most violent neighborhoods, it has transformed into a thriving community where art, creativity, and resilience prevail. Our local guide, Leiya, shared her story, surviving a narco massacre that devastated her family, and took us through an art and craft center. There, we met women and children who turned past hardship into vibrant artistic expression and community enterprise. It was a moving, eye-opening experience that exemplifies Colombia’s strength and heart.
Emeralds, Shopping, and Local Expertise
Colombia is home to one of the world’s largest emerald reserves, producing 70–90% of global supply. If jewelry shopping is on your agenda, this is the place to find spectacular designs. Always consult a local guide to ensure authenticity and avoid scams … expert guidance is invaluable!
Colonial Charm and Architectural Wonders
For lovers of colonial architecture, Colombia is a dream. From Cartagena’s pristine streets reminiscent of Cuba to countless charming small towns, there’s no shortage of picturesque locations. A month isn’t enough to fully explore, and I left wanting more, there’s always another hidden gem to discover.
Why I Keep Coming Back
Colombia offers a rich blend of culture, cuisine, music, history, and community spirit that is hard to find anywhere else. Each visit deepens my love for its people, landscapes, and stories. It’s a place where every encounter feels authentic, every meal memorable, and every journey transformative.
I can’t wait to return!
