If VISA is required for this destination, please contact us for assistance.
Please note that visas cannot be processed more than 90 days prior to departure and processing may take several weeks to complete. You may also apply directly at the Consulate in your area.
HEALTH
The Center for Disease Control suggests that all travelers be up to date on routine vaccines, including Chickenpox (Varicella), Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Flu (influenza), Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR), Polio, and Shingles. For this tour, it is especially important to be up to date on your Hepatitis A and B vaccines. The areas we will visit are not on sensitive zone with risk of malaria. We are traveling in April, which is the end of the summer, so the exposure to mosquitos is minimal. Consult with your physician about vaccines and whether or not to take Malaria pills.
LGBTQ+
South Africa is a continental leader in LGBTQ+ rights — the only African country with constitutional protections prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2006, making South Africa the first country in Africa to do so.
Legal protections extend to anti-discrimination laws in employment and services, and transgender people can change legal gender markers. (These progressive rights stem from the post-Apartheid constitution.)
Cape Town is widely regarded as the “gay capital” of South Africa (and Africa) with a well-developed LGBTQ+ scene and visible community life.
The De Waterkant neighborhood is Cape Town’s main LGBTQ+ hub — a walkable area with gay-owned bars, cafés, clubs, shops, and the famous rainbow crosswalk.
The city hosts Cape Town Pride every year (usually late February/early March), featuring parades, parties, cultural events, and community gatherings.
Cape Town consistently ranks among the world’s most LGBTQ+ friendly cities
Cape Town has been chosen to host WorldPride 2028 — the first time this international LGBTQ+ event will be held on the African continent.
WorldPride is an internationally recognized celebration and advocacy event that includes big Pride parades, human rights conferences, arts & culture programs, community forums, and global networking.
